Mission
The Mission of the Freedlander Learning Resource Center is to Inspire, Promote and Strengthen learning throughout the HCC community by providing current collections and technology in support of the College’s Institutional vision, mission, strategic plans and educational programs.
Library Location & Hours
The library is at the top of the main drive in the second building from the left. Take the middle door in the Freedlander Learning Center.
We are currently open:
- Monday - Thurs. - 8:00 a.m. - 9:00p.m.
- Friday - 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
- SAT. - SUN - Closed
The library is closed between semesters and during college holidays. Call to verify availability.

Library Card Information
To check out any material from the library you must have a valid HCC student ID. Your library number will be placed on the back of your student ID. If you are not a student, you may obtain a library card from the Circulation Desk by presenting a valid North Carolina driver's license or ID card. Your library card is valid for two years.
Loan Periods and Fines
Check Out Periods:
- Books: 3 weeks
- Reference: Library use only
- Periodicals: 24 hours
- Reserve Materials: Library use only
- Audiovisuals: 24 hours - telecourses only
Late Fees
- Books $.10 per day
- Periodicals: $.10 per day
- Library Videos: $1.00 per day
Other Library Services
The Circulation Desk is located on the 1st floor (entry level of the building). Books and other materials are checked out from this desk. You need a library card.
Computer Workstations The library's public access computer workstations are configured for research. Word processing, etc., may be done however research has priority. Word processing can be done in the open labs throughout campus. Computer use is restricted only by the research needs of other students. Library policy must limit all email or chat when research needs are in demand.
Printing and Copying Cash is needed to print from all library computers or to use the copiers. Copiers accept coins and dollar bills. Printout and copies are $ .10.
Fax Service A fax machine is available at the Reference Desk. The charge for sending a personal fax is $.10 for each a page. Additional charges apply for international faxing. Incoming faxes may be picked up at the Circulation Desk.
Reserves Instructors place books, articles, audiovisuals, or other items on reserve for students in their classes. These items are for use in the library only. Reserves should be requested from the Circulation Desk.
Interlibrary Loan Students, faculty, and staff may borrow from other libraries in the area, state, or region, materials that are unavailable in the HCC Library. Users must pay for the cost of photocopies acquired through this service, although borrowing books is usually free. To request a book through interlibrary loan, complete an Interlibrary Loan Book Request Form. To request periodical articles through interlibrary loan, complete an Interlibrary Loan/Duplication Request Form.
Library Instruction Group instruction in using library resources or software is available and encouraged. Arrangements may be made with any Librarian.
Periodicals
The HCC library subscribes to a number of magazines and journals, both popular and field-specific, as well as to several newspapers. Current Issues:
The latest 12 months of periodicals are located on the left side of the library as you walk through the main entrance. The most recent issues of these periodicals are on display and the previous months are stored underneath the shelves.
Back issues of periodicals are available in the low middle shelves located on the left center side of the library as you walk through the main entrance. If you are interested in a particular back issue, ask the person behind the Circulation Desk. Periodical Holdings: You can find out what periodicals the library owns as well as the years and formats (print, microfilm) the library holds by searching the:
- Periodicals Holdings List This is an alphabetical list of periodical holdings. For assistance in locating microfilm in cabinets and operating a microfilm reader/printer, see a librarian or staff member. Periodicals can be checked out for 24 hours, you may also make copies of the pages you need by using the photocopiers available in the library.
- Electronic Periodicals: The Library has access to NC LIVE which has 5000 periodical articles full text as well as newspapers, statistical data and even an encyclopedia.

Reference Services: Librarians are available during all hours of library operation to help library customers identify, interpret, and utilize various sources of information. Please do not hesitate to ask them for assistance. Our Reference librarians are happy to provide in-depth reference assistance by appointment and classroom library instruction.
