HCC Mill Pond

Haywood Community College will hold a free Mountain Echoes Jammin’ at the Mill Pond Celebration on Tuesday, August 5. The bluegrass jammin’ session will be held on the main campus from 5 until 8 p.m. The College is hosting the event as athank you to the communityfor passing the 1/4 cent sales tax. Board, foundation, college, and county officials will be on hand to express their gratitude.

Local performers are welcome to bring their instruments for Open Mic from 5 until 6 p.m. The Hominy Valley Boys will perform at 6 p.m. Local dance team, the Rough Creek Cloggers will also be performing. All area musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments to jam around the Mill Pond. Participants should bring their lawn chairs and blankets. Hot dogs, barbeque, chips, cookies, drinks, and t-shirts will be available for purchase. For more information on this event, please call 627-4580.

Haywood Community College’s Natural Resources Division and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission will offer Hunter Safety courses on August 11-13, September 8-10, October 27-29, November 3-5, and December 1-3 from 6-9:30 p.m. in rooms 309 and 310 on the HCC campus. Participants must attend three consecutive evenings to receive their certification.

These courses are offered as a community service and are free of charge. There are no age limits. Pre-registration is required. To register, please contact Jenny Carver, HCC Natural Resources Division, at jcarver@haywood.edu or (828) 627-4560.

Maggie Valley Festival Grounds

The Haywood Community College Natural Resources Management Department, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the Town of Maggie Valley, and Haywood Waterways Association are sponsoring a CATCH (Caring For Aquatics Through Conservation Habits) youth fishing clinic during the 19th Annual Great Smoky Mountain Trout Festival. The two clinics will be held on Saturday, June 21 at the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds. The first clinic will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 12:00 p.m. and requires pre-registration. An afternoon clinic with on-site registration will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m.

The CATCH program is designed to teach young people “how,” “when,” and “where” to fish as well as to introduce lessons in aquatic ecology, water safety, fishing ethics, and respect for the outdoors. Many youngsters in our community have never had a chance to learn how to fish or to explore aquatic habitats. CATCH provides this environmental education opportunity.

The CATCH Clinic is open to youth between the ages of 6 and 15. Necessary equipment will be furnished. A parent or guardian must register and attend with the youth.
