The Tests of General Educational Development (GED) provide adults, who have been unable to complete a high school education, with an opportunity to earn a to earn a high school diploma equivalency credential that will enable them to obtain jobs or advancement, enroll in higher education or technical training or fulfill a lifelong goal. The GED Tests, a nationally accepted standard of high school equivalency, documents that one has high school-level academic skills. The GED Testing Service of the American Council on Education develops and administers the GED Tests.

Among the many benefits of the GED testing program, passing the GED Tests provides an opportunity for adults to continue their education. In fact, 95 percent of U.S. colleges and universities accept GED graduates who meet their other qualifications for admission. About 96 percent of employers accept the GED credential as equal to a traditional high school diploma. 

Haywood Community College, through Adult Basic Skills, provides a comprehensive program of preparation for the GED Tests. Those interested in the GED certificate must enroll and participate in GED classes, pass pretests and pass the GED Tests. To pass the GED Tests they have to be able to read, compute, interpret information, and express themselves in writing on a level comparable to that of 67 percent of graduating high school seniors. An individual who makes passing scores will receive a GED a high school diploma equivalency awarded by the State Board of the North Carolina Community College System.
